THE “BLOOD EASTER”  AWARDS THE INTERNAZIONALE

On Sunday, 29th March, 1964, the play, called the “Blood Easter”, was played at the Local Town Hall’s stadium in Bologna. It was went  down it in the sport history with this name. Just to notice the reason why about this strange nickname! The two teams, before this match, were the top of  the same table with 39 points and they were boasted a point more than the Milan. In fact, the Bologna just led 39 points as three points were taken away by the  “ F.I.G.” –  Italian Sport Football Federation – due to a suspected doping case.  These three points  related to the following sum: the defeat given by the sport judge about the mentionned case in the match to the Torino won 4-1, besides one penalty. The sports’ newspapers had echoed it too much connecting to the Easter that was really celebrated the day of the match.

The Local Town Hall’s stadium in Bologna was quite sold out in the half week thanks to the  advance sale, free and subscribers’ tickets. In fact, more than 50,000 people saw the match. The chief of police in Bologna declared to carry out some extraordinary measures about traffic, law and order. In fact, crowd couldn’t enter the stadium with flags, umbrellas or other blunt objects. It assumed that more than 1,500 police forces ( members of the Carabinieri Corps serving as a police force and officers) would have been activated from  the early morning to the end of the Black-blue fans departure from Bologna.

The Bologna Football Club and the Bologna town council asked the fans to be quiet and sporting by using some posters put on the streets. On the other hand, the coordination centre of Inter Football Club of Milan informed that, on Saturday afternoon, some posters, about the traditional sport friendship between the two teams, would have been dropped over Bologna by a plane called “ the peace plane”. Due to the importance of this match, the Swiss and West Germany TV crews were present in Bologna in order to live broadcast, in the same countries, the clue match.

The fab Corso’s goal cancelled all hard feelings, took also all bad intentions away from the most hotheaded fans and recalled the crowd to the right sport reality. From now and then, the fans dedicated themselves to see the match and forgot the hard feelings to support the generous, moving but useless Bologna attempt to overturn the situation and to avoid the defeat menace that it became inevitable with the passage of minutes. Moreover, at the end, for the excellent umpteeth Suarez’s performance, the supporters clapped sportingly for long and they stressed the Internationale’s credits for the win. So, the sport prevailed!

Just a spot of play-play

The two teams played turn till 19′ when the Internationale led. Picchi passed to Suarez who passed to Mazzola at his left. Then, Mazzola passed to Corso that passed very fast to Milani and scored Negri by his left foot. Afterwards, the Bologna attacked haphazardly, but the Internazionale scored again by Mazzola at 27′ , after the referee had already stopped the match due to Jair’s foul. Goal cancelled! At 49′ the Black-bleu team doubled: Mazzola dribbled Fogli, Furlanis, Janich and crossed exactly from the  left and Jair, header, scored in the net and Negri was wrong-footed.  At 52′ penalty, pass exchange between Haller, Bulgarelli,Haller who ran very fast, but  he was blocked down by Burnich and Corso in a strong sandwich. The referee had no doubt and penalty. Haller had just finished three clear penalties that scored in the same way the net: dummy at the left and scored at the right  of the goalkeeper. As Giuliano Sarti was an experienced and skilful goalkeeper, he could  have noticed the same game play. Haller was on the penalty shot, he kicked as usual and Sarti in two times blocked the ball with a sure grapple.

The Bologna went on attacking after the wrong penalty, but no dangerously for Sarti, apart from Renna passed to Bulgarelli who failed two steps from the net at 65′. Negri was attacked dangerously, but he was obliged to save  two fab kiks made by  Facchetti at 72′ and by Milani at 75′. Finally, the Bologna scored at 77′. Renna passed to Furlanis who tackled Suarez and scored at the high left corner of the Black-blue net.
