WEC, Monza – Rahel Frey: «We made some mistakes today, but we don’t give up»
The Swiss Iron Dames driver gave us her thoughts on today’s race as well as a few more thoughts on their season and feeling for the new Huracán GT3 EVO2. Today the all-female crew started from pole position and led most of the race, but that was not enough to repeat last year’s podium finish. The girls finished 5th in the Italian leg of the endurance world championship.
Race analysis
A race dominated for the first part with a large gap on the pursuers, but then faded amid bad luck and strategies to be revised: «Clearly we are disappointed, finishing P5 is not what we expected. First of all, congratulations to our teammates on the podium. The team was able to celebrate and they were fantastic. Unfortunately it wasn’t us. We looked strong for most of the race, we drove very well but unfortunately we got all the race strategies wrong today. We always waited until the last minute for pit calls and every time we came back in, the race restarted with the green flag. That cost us everything».
A season lived as a protagonist, but one last step is missing to return to victory. «We make mistakes – this is where Rahel Frey identifies the criticality – both on the part of the drivers and the race wall like today, but we are a team and therefore we lose together and win together. Now we have to analyse the race data and understand it better». Also understanding some of the decisions made today by race control was not easy: «We did not expect so many safety cars. It is definitely something to take into consideration for the next races, but we definitely got the timing of the calls wrong».
Yet these days do not dent the ambitions of the ‘Iron Ladies’: «Our goals do not change. We are Iron Dames, we continue to follow our dreams and one day the sacrifices will be repaid, but today we are a little sad».
A glimpse into the future and the present
A comment also on the new Lamborghini car that the girls are driving this year between IMSA and GT World Challenge Europe as well as a little thought for our Imola, where they raced last season in both GTWCE and ELMS. «You cannot compare the two cars (Porsche and Lamborghini, ed.) they are two too different concepts. The new Huracán GT3 EVO 2 is new and not quite ready to race yet. We have to do some good development work. The BoP in IMSA helps a lot, but we still have a lot of work to do for the race». Perhaps he will return to the Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit of Imola next season with the WEC, but in the meantime he told us about the track: «We love Imola, we were very strong in the GTWCE and for Iron Lynx it is the home race, so we love racing there».
