WEC, Monza – Alessio Picariello: «This podium gives us confidence for the next races»

The Italian-Belgian of Iron Lynx gave us his comments on the 6 Hours of Monza that saw his crew finish 2nd at the end of their home race, and thus take their first podium of the season.

«It is very nice to have reached the podium for the team because it is the home race. It was a bit unexpected because we were unlucky at the start and we were two laps behind. There were two safety cars that helped us get back into the race and then, thanks to our pace, we were able to climb back up to second place». With a crowd like the one at Monza, Alessio also enjoyed the post-race podium with the track invasion. «I am half Italian so it’s like being a bit at home for me. I had fun on the podium and the fans were incredible. It was fun to give the crowd the cap and the bottle of champagne. To make a podium at Monza is always legendary».

Now only the last two races of the WEC season are missing, at Fuji and then in Bahrain the final chapter. The team from Cesena has good feelings ahead of the final stages: «Our goal after this podium is to win. We know it is difficult and the level of the championship is very high, but let’s see how the car performs in Japan and Sakhir. Today’s result helps mentally and gives us the charge to do another good result at the next race».

If Alessio had to give himself a grade for his season, what would it be? «In the WEC it was a difficult season, especially at Le Mans. We retired after only two hours of racing so at the moment the season cannot be satisfactory. Certainly thanks to this result now morale is higher. I don’t want to put a number on my season, but now the important thing is that we all feel more motivated and what we did today shows that we can be on the podium. So we are ready to push again at Fuji».
