Amarcord: Bologna vs Empoli some years ago – 9th December
Bologna Vs Empoli without wins
The first match Bologna vs Empoli was played back on 3rd May, 1998 that is to say during the season in which Roberto Baggio “ Divin Codino” wore the Red-blue team shirt.
Short summary of the match
Just the time to whistle the beginning of the match, the Ulivieri’s guys streamed into the first Empoli’s field trying to score right now. Thanks to this game strategy, Bologna was leading by two goals at just 17′. At 14′ thanks to a penalty by Roberto Baggio due to Ametrano’s foul on the same nr.10, Bologna scored 19 goals during the championship. Afterwards, by Kolyvanov’s corner, Paramatti headed and scored at 17′. On doing these two goals Empoli rejoing died away as during the match the Red-blue brushed the third goal at 29′ with Andersson and Mangone but Roccati saved with double returns. At 36′ the Swedish Andersson wasn’t still able to score thanks to the umpteeth Empoli goalkeepr’s save. The active Bologna, after playing in a sensational and fantastic way in 40 minutes, it started, unfortunately, to play without strength and its play was not anymore as the beginning! Just 60s’ before Cappellini headed and didn’t score: So at 42′ by a Pane’s long shot, Esposito cleared Mangone and Sterchele lobbed and scored. The end of the first time the score was Bologna vs Empoli 2-1.
At the second time, the coach Ulivieri changed Carnasciali, injured by a contracture, who -played not very well, with Dall’Igna and changed Kolyvanov, played not in good condition, with Fontolan. Despite these substitutions the Blue team played very fast against the Red-blue.
A really funny event happend before the beginning of the second time when the teams were fielded waiting for the referee’s whistle. A mid-life man, an employee above suspicion from Calderara di Reno located near Bologna, wanted to give a present to Roberto Baggio “the ex Codino”. He crossed the fence and flung to him. Just reached him he put a Reb-blue scarf on him and he kissed him while the dumbfounded fans were applauding.
The second time went on trying to score the Red-blue Sterchele’ s goalpost.. Trying more and more to score, after a long sequences of scrimmages, two umpunished Fontolan’s and Pavone’s handballs weren’t reconignized by the Messina referee. Indeed, the big Baldini defender was moved to the centre-forward by Spalletti, so Empoli equalized thanks to “the little gift” of the referee. The timekeeper said 93′ and there was just a bit to added times. Penalty kicked by Empoli as just outside the Red-blue box. Lucenti kicked and the ball bounced, involuntarily, on Magoni’s feet wall..After recognizing no bad fouls in the box, Messina whistled the penalty and the audience was astonished! Cappellini kicked from the penalty spot and, after a bit run, he scored Sterchele.
Finally, the draw was right as the teams were satisfied: Empoli reached the salvation and Bologna was still in competition with Intertoto Cup.
