Amarcord: Juventus vs Bologna some years ago – 7th January

Twenty-two strong lions fought in a marsh

 On Sunday, 1^st Mai 1932, the most important match of the season was played at Corso Naviglio stadium in Turin. The host Juventus  and the visiting Bologna fought. The two teams were in  a different point in the classification and the Juventus was led . Moreover, the Juventus challenged the Bologna with the best championship attack (70 goals) while the Bologna had the best defence (23 goals).

The tickets were sold out due to the fans opinions that this match was really important as they considered it a final championship. A special train was organized to move hundreds fans from Bologna to the Mole Antonelliana in Turin. Some days before the match, the tickets were all sold out. Just to report it,  the continuous rain fell in the preceding week of the match and even during the match had changed the ground to a marsh.

 Short summary of the match

 At 3 o’clock, as soon as the referee Cesare Lenti whistled the match started, the two teams began fighting very hard.  The match was characterised by some attacks and reattacks without none of the two teams were able to prevail in the first 5′. By a Reguzzoni’s  kick towards the centre of the box, a scrimmage was created in front of the Combi’s net and a quick action of Monti foiled it. Then, Cesarini kicked a long ball to Munerati who dribbled Montesanto and went towards the net. Gianni threw himself at the Juventus player’s feet and saved the net. Then, Combi advanced Schiavio, from a corner kicked by Orsi and Gianni saved it among a players’ scrimmage. Bologna led at 6′. Bertolini kicked Maini: penalty scored by Genovesi with the ball that fell in front of Combi and the goalkeeper was able to touch it  and sent it against the crossbar. Maini was very quick on rebounding and took it again and scored. The Red-blue players rejoiced but the fans were really upset.

 Afterwards, the Juventus brushed the tie right now but Gasperi saved it by a hopeless  head action  that freed the corner. At 20′ the Juventus equalized. Orsi kicked a long ball that let himself  to head towards the goalkeeper Gianni. When the White-black was about to kick, Gasperi knocked him down. Lenti didn’t hesitate to give the penalty, of course! Orsi was at the penalty spot and kicked a very strong ball at the right of Gianni who tried to dive without success but Orsi scored.  After the equalizer, the two teams fought uninterrupted and the Bologna attacked dangerously the Juventus by Schiavio. On the other hand, Cesarini attacked seriously Gianni that was hardly able to stop a slippery ball by diving. Then, a penalty kicked by Baldi that caused much chaos inside the White-black penalty area. Unfortunately, Combi didn’t take the ball but Monti was able to raise the ball from the bottom to the top. The ball fell down exactly in front of the unguarded net without finding any Red-blue players ready to grab  the advantageous chance. Bertolino fouled Schiavio at 4′ before the end of the first time. Penalty, of course! Baldi kicked the ball and sent it at the Schiavio left that voided among the defenders and scored Combi for the second time. Just going on the play, a worse event happened. The White-black centre-half Monti and the Red-blue forward Schiavio knocked. The Red-blue fell down. The White-black player threw himself at him and began hitting and stepping on him several times deliberately to his knee to lose consciousness. Angiolino Schiavio was taken in the changing rooms by arms. The referee Lenti considered  this action regular and he didn’t issue any disciplinary actions. The two teams went to the changing rooms with the Bologna led for 2-1.

 At the second time,  the injured Schiavio was placed at the wing and he was useless. The Juventus began attacking very hard and the Bologna had to defend itself including Maini.  The Red-blue defence was under pressure.Suddenly, at 54′, the Juventus equalized. Monti kicked a delicious ball to Vecchina that moved towards the end line and scored.  Gianni would have saved that kick but, perhaps, due to the defenders placed in front of him, he saw just late. The ball came out close to the ground in the corner at his right. Gianni jumped and touched it but he wasn’t able to stop it. Juventus vs Bologna 2-2.

 The host players were thrilled at this net that were more superior to the Red-blue ones even thanks to their superioty numbers as Schiavio was in the ground just to be present. At a quarter of an hour from the end of the match,  Gasperi did a handfoul in the box but the referee didn’t notice it.  As forecast the goal was scored at 78′. Vecchina struggled in a players scrimmage and scored the same goal of the tie. Even in this case, Gianni jumped but it was useless. Juventus vs Bologna 3-2.

Just 15′ before the end of the match, the Bologna wasn’ t able to prevail against the strong Juventus defence despite it tried to regain the hopeless tie. Morover, the Juventus could  score the fourth goal. An Orsi’s kick was taken by Vecchina and kicked it to the net and passed over Gianni but Montesanto ran and sent the ball back  just the goal line. A corner against the Bologna, a Schiavio’s and a Maini’s attack all saved. Then, the referee Lenti whistled three times the end of the match.
