Bologna on my mind – The (m’)old Lady. (13 Nov)

Time is transient: that is how things go. We measure its passing, pinpointing small moments in our minds. Those moments, and the passing of time, mean a lot to us. During Bologna’s recent history, the whole “Rossoblu” fan base experienced those small moments of all-encompassing joy or desperation, as if they were bus stops, or, perhaps even better, as if they were cabinets at the pharmacist’s shop, with all those drawers that get opened only once at a time, and only if necessary. Our lack of awareness of the bigger picture was caused by how irrelevant the football season as a whole had become to us. We cherished those moments, considering them more worthy of our attention than the whole championship. At least, we did so until yesterday. Today, we begin a new era. We are overwhelmed by what has been happening, we are as surprised as children, we look to friends who are fans of other teams with conceit, a feeling which we had not experienced in a long time, despite being the “team that makes the world tremble”.

Today, we are starting to perceive those small moments assembling like drops of mercury, forming a bigger mass. Today, we see the whole line of time, not only the individual moments stored in our memories. Today, we understand that tomorrow will be even better, better than our starting point, which, after the first matches of the season, had almost become a narrow alley in our minds. Today, Bologna FC is like Neptune’s statue in Piazza Maggiore: beautiful and eternal, a constant symbol of our everyday life.

Tomorrow, we will still remember one specific match, that one goal scored under the Bulgarelli section in the stadium, one display of virtuosity of any of our players, the look on a father’s face, moved to tears for having experienced victory while holding his son in his arms. However, we will be aware that these are but small, transient moments. Bologna is back with the big teams, and the games against Juventus will merely be 90-minutes fights for points: nothing more. The big step has been made, whatever the outcome of this football season. Let us forget Juventus, “the old Lady”. We have something else to think about: the return of our future.
